Bachelor of Science in Nursing
A career in nursing requires preparation, and a student entering EMU’s nursing program should have a well-rounded high school education which includes the study of biology and chemistry.
RN-BSN
Registered nurses wanting to earn their BSN can select from the traditional program (day classes) and the Adult Degree Completion Program (evening program), designed for working professionals. The ADCP nursing program is offered at the main Harrisonburg campus and at EMU’s Lancaster site.
LPN-RN
If you’re an LPN, we assume your prior learning and work experience is pertinent to the curriculum, but you need additional learning to earn your RN. At EMU, LPNs work closely with faculty mentors to navigate the program throughout their four semesters. LPNs initially enroll in two bridge courses that focus on the transition to the RN roles, such as planning care for patients, using research in practice and facilitating patient learning. Later courses build on the nursing role in relation to complexity of care, the number of patients, and the inclusion of families and communities as clients.

The Traditional Pathway is a two-year curriculum following the completion of general education and prerequisite requirements. The Traditional Pathway in nursing must be completed on a full-time basis. The Traditional BSN program is a competitive program and program enrollment is limited due to the number of clinical spaces available. Admission into the program is once a year (Fall term only) and all general education (except ENGH 302) and nursing pre-requisite courses must be complete by the end of Mason’s Spring term (not Summer term) before the program begins (thus courses need to be complete by May 20th).

Instruction is intense with courses offered full-time, providing students the opportunity to earn a BSN degree at JCHS in 4 semesters (16 months.) Due to the full-time demands of this program, it is strongly recommended that students not work while enrolled in the nursing courses. “Graduates of accelerated programs are prized by nurse employers who value the many layers of skill and education these graduates bring to the workplace. Employers report that these graduates are more mature, possess strong clinical skills, and are quick studies on the job.” (www.aacn.nche.edu).
