Associate Degree in Nursing
The Nursing program at Central Maine is designed as a multiple entry/exit curriculum, preparing individuals at both the Practical Nurse and the Registered Nurse levels. Year one of the curriculum serves a dual purpose: by itself it meets the educational criteria for practical nursing; it also serves as the first year of the two year Associate in Science (RN) degree program. Upon application, the student chooses to pursue the goal of either the Diploma (PN) or the Associate Degree (RN). Graduates of either level are prepared to work in structured health care settings such as hospitals and extended care facilities, to pursue careers in medical/surgical, obstetrical, pediatric, geriatric, or psychiatric nursing. Graduates earning an associate degree may transfer into the Bachelor of Science in Nursing program at the University of Southern Maine.

The nursing program prepares men and women to become registered nurses at the associate degree level. Upon completion of the program, graduates are eligible to take the NCLEX Registered Nurse (RN) licensure examination. The Nursing Program is approved by the Maine State Board of Nursing, 161 Capitol Street, 158 State House Station, Augusta, Maine 04333-0158 (207-287-1133) and accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN), 3343 Peachtree Road NE, Suite 850, Atlanta, Georgia 30326 (404-975-5000, www.nlnac.org). The curriculum blends nursing courses with general education courses to provide a sound theoretical base for nursing practice. Clinical experiences are concurrent with didactic experiences during the four semesters. If students are unable to meet clinical objectives or obtain a course grade of C (75) or better, they fail that Nursing course. Students may apply for reinstatement/re-admission to the Nursing program once. Associate Degree in Nursing
UMA takes great pride in its Nursing Program, which has graduated more than 1,600 RNs. In virtually every health care facility in central Maine and even around the state, you’ll find UMA-educated nurses filling critically important roles in the delivery of care to patients. A constant in our tradition of expertly preparing nursing students is a superb faculty who combine nursing experience and teaching excellence. Like the care they show to patients in the health care setting, our faculty display the same care in the classroom, providing each and every nursing student with the attention and understanding they need to succeed. UMA currently has a three to five-year waitlist for the Associate of Science in Nursing program. We are no longer adding to the waitlist for the program and are moving to a competitive direct admission process once the existing waitlist has been depleted.
RN-BSN
Are you an RN in Maine looking to expand your horizons, both in how you care for others and how you care for yourself? With a holistic focus and approach, UMA's BS Completion Program (RN- BS) will expose you to new ways of caring, while preparing you for exciting new career opportunities or graduate level study.

Bachelor of Science in Nursing
UNE's 4-year Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program is offered on the Biddeford Campus with four semesters that build a foundation of knowledge in science and humanities while introducing students to related health professional disciplines. The last four semesters are delivered on the Portland campus where students are immersed in nursing course work and clinical experiences.
RN-BSN
UNE's Registered Nurse (RN to BSN) program is offered on the Portland Campus designed for the non-traditional student and working nurse. RN's who have graduated from an associate degree or diploma program may return to school to continue their professional development at the beginning of the third year. Baccalaureate-level nursing courses are conveniently held one day a week to make scheduling easier for the working nurse. Many students have found that the ability to continue employment in their chosen profession while enrolled in the BSN program enhances the learning experience and helps to offset the cost of education.
2nd Degree BSN
UNE's Accelerated Second Degree Bachelor's (A-BSN) Program starts in December and runs continuously for 17 months on the Portland Campus. It consists of five semesters, including a summer session. The program is designed for students who have a non-nursi

The baccalaureate nursing program requires the completion of 120-128 credits of study and culminates in a baccalaureate degree (BS). Graduates of the traditional and accelerated BS programs are eligible to sit for the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-RN) upon completion of their respective program.
RN-BSN/MSN
The School of Nursing faculty recognizes the need and desirability for registered nurses to attain baccalaureate and masters degrees within Maine. The nursing faculty has designed two options for RNs - the first leading to a Bachelor of Science degree (BS) and the second (described in USM's Graduate Catalog) leading to a Master of Science degree. RNs returning to school face many complexities; every effort is made to remain attentive and flexible in adjusting the plan of study and accommodating individual needs. Advice with prerequisites, course planning, and course sequencing for RNs may be obtained by contacting Brenda Webster at (207) 780-4802.
Accelerated BSN
The faculty of the School of Nursing recognizes the desire of people with baccalaureate degrees in disciplines other than nursing to become nurses and has designed an accelerated program that leads to a B.S. in nursing in 15 months of full-time study.
