Associate Degree in Nursing
The first class in the new 2-year ADN program was admitted in January 1991. The program was well received by the community and now graduates over 200 students per year. Pass rates on the national nurse licensing exam continue to be at or above state and national standards. Surveys of graduates and their employers demonstrate that graduates of the school are well prepared, respected, and sought after. The ADN nursing program is accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (last visit 2009).

LPN-RN
The programs’ LPN to RN transition track allows admitted LPN’s the option of 3 tracks: 1. generic; 2. advanced placement via exam; 3. credit for experience with three semesters of nursing courses to complete.

Practical Nursing
The job of the L.P.N is to provide basic bedside care, taking vital signs such as temperature, blood pressure, pulse, and respiration. They also prepare and give injections, monitor catheters, apply dressings, treat bedsores, and give alcohol rubs and massages. LPNs monitor their patients and report adverse reactions to medications or treatments. They collect samples for testing, perform routine laboratory tests, feed patients, and record food and fluid intake and output. To help keep patients comfortable, LPNs assist with bathing, dressing, and personal hygiene. Upon completion of the program, the graduate earns a technical diploma and is eligible to take the licensing exam to become a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN). The program is sixteen (16) months in length.

Louisiana College is widely known for its quality academic programs and for its spiritual environment. Nursing graduates experience the best of both; leaving LC prepared to face the professional challenges of a demanding health care environment with the compassion needed to treat patients as individuals. At LC we very deliberately incorporate our Christian faith within the learning environment and seek to develop graduates who will use nursing as both a ministry and a vocation. Based on principles of adult education and focusing on the skills and experiences nurses bring to the educational setting the RN to BSN program includes required general education coursework and nursing courses designed and delivered for RN’s only.

Master of Science in Nursing
The faculty believes that graduate education degrees in nursing should be based on undergraduate general education and professional knowledge, attitudes and applied skills, which evolve from the concept that the individual is a holistic being. As nursing curricula progress from undergraduate to graduate education, the focus of the scope of practice affords students the opportunity to study, in-depth, knowledge in selected roles in nursing such as clinical nurse specialists, administrators, educators, consultants, nurse anesthetists and nurse practitioners; to refine clinical competencies; to develop an advanced clinical practice, and to utilize and conduct research. Graduate programs in nursing have the mission of educating qualified persons to improve nursing, healthcare, and education in order to advance the discipline of nursing.

Doctor of Nursing Practice
The post-masters Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) is a practice-focused doctoral nursing degree designed for nurses seeking careers in advanced clinical nursing practice and nurse executive ranks. The purpose of this program is to prepare advanced practice nurses to translate academic research, promote evidence based practice, and develop systems of care based on research utilization. LSUHSC School of Nursing is the only school of nursing in Louisiana affiliated within an academic health sciences center which affords students unique opportunities for interprofessional education and research.
