LPN
Licensed practical nurses (LPNs) are the entry level of the profession. In Iowa they are responsible for utilizing their nursing knowledge and skills to care for the sick, injured, convalescent, and disabled under the direction of physicians or registered nurses in structured health care settings.

Grand View has designed a BSN degree program that meets the needs of today’s nurses. Our BSN program provides convenience, flexibility and affordability. Most classes in this program are scheduled one afternoon or evening per week. Students may attend full- or part-time. Grand View participates in the Iowa Articulation Plan, as approved by the Iowa Board of Nursing. LPN-RN
The Associate Degree Nursing (ADN) program prepares students for entry-level practice as registered nurses and provides upward mobility for licensed practical nurses. Students gain clinical practice in local hospitals, public mental health institutions, community health agencies, public school nursing, and local long-term care facilities. Students must complete the Practical Nursing program before starting the Associate Degree Nursing program. Graduates of the Associate Degree Nursing program are eligible to take the national and state/regional examinations for licensure, which is required to practice as a Registered Nurse in any state. LPN
The Practical Nursing program prepares students for entry-level practice as licensed practical nurses. Approximately one-half of the instructional time is spent in actual clinical practice in hospitals and nursing homes under the supervision of nursing instructors. Students are trained in nursing fundamentals, growth and development, pharmacology, anatomy and physiology, medical surgical nursing including gerontology, maternal-child nursing, and mental health concepts. Graduates are eligible to take the national and state/regional examinations for licensure, which is required to practice in any state. Associate Degree in Nursing
Iowa Valley Community College district (IVCCD) offers a Practical Nursing diploma program and Associate Degree Nursing (RN) program at Marshalltown Community College and Ellsworth Community College in Iowa Falls. Both campuses offer ladder programs in which students must first earn their Practical Nursing diploma and the pass the Practical Nursing licensure exam prior to entering the Associate Degree Nursing program. Associate Degree in Nursing
Upon completion of the practical nurse course sequence at Iowa Western, students are eligible for progression to the Associate Degree or RN portion of the program. Earning the Associate of Applied Science Degree allows students to sit for the NCLEX-RN test, and practice as a Registered Nurse after passing the exam. Building on the curriculum of the PN program, the ADN student grows from the individual focus to family, community and population groups. The Department of Nursing offers a four-year baccalaureate nursing program leading to a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree. The curriculum is designed with courses in the liberal arts, the sciences and nursing to enhance one's knowledge and understanding of professional nursing practice. Nursing courses are taken in the sophomore, junior, and senior years in conjunction with remaining degree requirements. The nursing curriculum integrates theoretical nursing content, simulation and skills practice and clinical experience in in-patient and community health settings. The collaboration of the Department of Nursing with Mercy Medical Center and metro Catholic schools in Cedar Rapids allows for unique clinical experiences in the health promotion of children. NIACC offers two routes of entry into the program. Upon completion of the program, students are awarded an associate degree in applied science and are then prepared to work in a beginning staff nurse position. Graduates are eligible for the NCLEX-RN exam. After passing this exam, the graduate receives registered nurse status.


Practical Nursing
Practical Nursing is designed to prepare men and women to work in nursing situations which are relatively stable and unchanging. The PN is trained to assist experienced registered nurses and physicians in more complex and rapidly changing situations. The PN program can be completed in one summer term and two academic terms. Minimum standards for graduation are an overall grade point average of 2.00 (C) in the prescribed curriculum; a "C" in each nursing course including theory and a satisfactory achievement in clinical performance; and at least a " C - " in required nonnursing courses. Individuals considering enrollment or currently enrolled in the PN program should be aware that prior felony convictions may prohibit eligibility for licensure upon completion of the program.

Associate of Science in Nursing
The Associate Degree in Nursing builds upon the foundations of practical nursing. The associate degree nurse is responsible for the management of patient and family nursing care in which the needs are more complex. SWCC’s nursing program has participated in the Iowa Articulation Plan since 1991 and therefore graduates of SWCC’s associate degree nursing program are able to articulate easily into four-year colleges' bachelor of science degree in nursing (BSN) programs in Iowa. So, if your plan is to stay in Iowa and obtain your BSN from an Iowa school, SWCC is the place for you. Classes begin annually in late-August and graduation is in late-June. The Creston campus offers LPN and RN and the Red Oak Center offers RN only. Creston is 70 miles southwest of Des Moines and Red Oak is 50 miles southeast of Omaha, NE.

SWCC offers nursing education as a "ladder concept." New students are eligible to apply for the practical nursing (LPN) program. Bachelor of Science in Nursing
The BSN program is accredited by the State of Iowa Board of Nursing and nationally, by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). The program is unique in that students complete more theory prior to their patient care experiences which extends time to acquire required nursing skills. Unlicensed first year and transfer students are identified as basic students as opposed to registered nurse students who are licensed without a BSN.

The Bachelor of Nursing program has been designed for students who already have a current bachelor degree and wish to return to school for nursing.


RN-BSN
RNs who desire to earn the BSN degree at St. Ambrose University need to fulfill additional general education and nursing courses. It is advisable to complete the majority of the remaining general education courses prior to completing the required 27 credits of nursing courses. The additional general education credits may be completed through a number of options. RN students typically attend class at the ACCEL program (Adult College Curriculum for Education and Leadership) site. ACCEL is designed for adult students who have at least three years of full-time work experience and have completed a minimum of 24 transferable credits with a grade point average of 2.0 or better.

This program is for associate degree and diploma-prepared RNs who are ready to expand their nursing skills and professional potential by earning the BSN. The BSN serves as the base for graduate study in nursing and opens many professional opportunities.
